Tomatometers 6,6 of 10. movie info Three Christs tells the story of an extraordinary experiment that began in 1959 at Michigan's Ypsilanti State Hospital, where Dr. Alan Stone treated three paranoid schizophrenic patients who each believe they are Jesus Christ. Dr. Stone pioneers a simple, yet revolutionary treatment: instead of submitting the patients to electroshock, forced restraints and tranquilizers, he puts them in a room together to confront their delusions. What transpires is a darkly comic, intensely dramatic story about the nature of identity and the power of empathy.

Three christs review. The christian warrior pictures. Three christs film review. Three christ the king. IFC Films The title is a groan-inducing misnomer: While there are indeed “three Christs” in Jon Avnets film by the same name—i. e. three paranoid schizophrenics who each believe they are Jesus Christ—a fourth walks amongst them. Hes Dr. Alan Stone (Richard Gere) a new psychologist at Ypsilanti State Hospital who treats these patients with talk therapy instead of electroshock. Avnet and co-writer Eric Nazarian characterize Stone as a hip figure in the late-50s mental health system: He believes in empathetic care, not punitive faux-remedies. He loves Lenny Bruce. He has an active sex life with his wife and former research assistant (Julianna Margulies) who unwaveringly supports her husband at every turn. Yet Stone also suffers from Christ-like delusions about his ability to cure patients of mental illness. Three Christs is the kind of film that verbalizes this subtext by having Stone make a Freudian slip about the number of Christs in his care. You see, the schizophrenics are treating him as well. Three Christs is based on a 1959 case study by social psychologist Milton Rokeach, who later came to believe his research was built on unethical, manipulative tactics. Rokeach would often act dishonestly towards the three Christs, giving them forged letters from the hospital chief or close relatives that would cause them further distress instead of dismantling their delusions. Avnet includes these events in Three Christs, but the films saccharine tone and Geres banal performance nevertheless belies the most compelling real-life wrinkle in the story: Stone, a character based on Rokeach, never becomes the films accidental villain as good intentions curdle into darker methods. Instead, hes portrayed as a renegade doctor who thumbs his nose at administrative red tape and goes against his superiors at every turn. He doesnt play by the rules but gets—not results, exactly, since his patients are never “cured. ” Still, he rates higher than the unfeeling automatons who want to shock them into catatonic states, so whos to say if hes actually a negative force? Rather than explore the myriad failures of mid-20 th century Americas mental health system—the ostensible focus of Three Christs— Avnet and Nazarian indulge in trite observations about the mentally ill, while stumbling through by-the-numbers backstories of every principal character that conveniently explain their behavior. Still, Three Christs hackneyed script cant explain away the tic-heavy, borderline-offensive performances by the main trio of Peter Dinklage, Bradley Whitford, and Walton Goggins, all of whom affect stereotypically “crazy” dispositions or accents that the inmates from One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest would consider a bit much. Nor does it account for the films slapdash editing— which makes Three Christs feel both rushed and painfully long—or Avnets tiresome point-and-shoot direction. Similar to the corny writing, Jeff Russos syrupy score prods you in the ribs whenever its time to feel. An insipid, boring mess, Three Christs doesnt even have the decency to be amusing, apart from Stephen Roots forced delivery of the films title followed by a what-a-world head shake. Theres no salvation to be found in this story of a sane man learning about his own limitations from the insane—only suffering.

"Three Christs" was a last minute choice of mine at the TIFF. As a big Dinklage's fan, and considering that it was a world premiere, it was easy enough to go check it out. I'm glad I did. This movie is one about the brain and its struggles, but it does so with a big heart. It's funny and touching with a good balance, and the acting is top notch (I'm actually a bigger Dinklage's fan after the movie. The underlying themes about psychiatry as science and its potential negative effect on personality, the nature of identity, the complex interaction of desire and fear are inhabiting the film and are as relevant today as they were at the time. In summary, a great entertaining movie with a deeper layer. and a stellar Dinklage.

Theres a moment in Jon Avnets “Three Christs” when the movies central psychiatrist Dr. Stone (Richard Gere) suffers a Freudian slip so on-the-nose, you could tell it would happen before he says it: In defending his unorthodox treatment of three men who referred to themselves as Jesus Christ, Dr. Stone accidentally refers to four men, not three, to his supervisors. This prompts some awkward discussion, but the purpose of the scene is clear: The good doctor also suffers from some godlike illusions of grandeur himself. However great Gere or his co-stars are, none of them can soothe all that ails “Three Christs, ” a milquetoast January release. The movie has that one terribly obvious moment of clarity, but the rest of it seems to stand by Dr. Stones crusade unquestionably. Only he recognizes the cruelty of mental institutions in 1959. Only he knows what hes doing, and everyone else is just in his way. Hes in tune to a future where his favorite comic Lenny Bruce will be more revered and where electroshock therapy will be a thing of the past. Its a simplified, reductive portrait of a complex story, and it feels as if theres more to it that hasnt made it to the screen. Dr. Stone is convinced he can cure and rehabilitate his patients to lead normal social lives again if only protocol and bureaucracy were not in his way. To his credit, Gere does an amicable job of balancing the calming presence of a psychiatrist who truly wants to reach his patients and the drive of a researcher hellbent on finding the right answer. With his patients, hes comforting, tough but firm when need be, but when Dr. Stone is off to see his bosses, Gere plays it almost childishly petulant and pushy. Its in these scenes when his savior complex is most insufferable although, for the most part, Geres performance is relatively dependable, at least until he tries to employ a warbling Brooklyn accent that none of the five boroughs would claim. The story attempts to empathize with their tortured backgrounds, stories of severe loss and rejection that possibly triggered their holy delusions. They are at their most interesting when exploring the awkward push-and-pull rapport between three men that claim to be the Son of God. At first, they sit far apart and snipe at each other, but over time, those boundaries soften and they begin to bond in ways their former doctors never expected. However, there are moments, when the actors subtly give way to moments of full-out overacting, that it almost feels as if the movie is voyeuristically enjoying its characters pain. Also Read: Walton Goggins to Star in 'The Unicorn' Comedy Pilot at CBS “Three Christs” also falls short of doing justice to the two women in the film, Becky (Charlotte Hope) and Ruth (Julianna Margulies. Becky is Dr. Stones assistant, and aside from a potentially interesting backstory thats referred to only once, she is there for one of the patients to leer at and make uncomfortable. The movie even seems to suggest shes almost charmed by his unfiltered platitudes. But aside from enduring sexual remarks and marveling at the genius of Dr. Stone, theres not much of a reason for her character. Ruth, Dr. Stones wife, is similarly limited in that she fulfills only the part of a sexually-satisfied partner who loves her husband and senses there might be some competition in his fondness for Becky, especially since Ruth was his previous research assistant before they were married. “Three Christs” follows a relatively well-tread formula, which is perhaps why it feels so inert. Its a good, relative surface-level reading of events, but the man-on-a-crusade approach feels so much more dramatic than it needs to be. The cast cant cure all the movies problems, from its abrupt ending to a random acid-test scene, but its not without its curious appeal as a star-studded failed “One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest” experiment. 30 Most Memorable Rom-Coms of the 2010s, From 'Easy A' to 'Crazy Rich Asians' Photos) Here are some of the most endearing romantic comedies of the last decade.

As his first study, he takes on the particularly challenging case of three men-Joseph (Peter Dinklage) Leon (Walton Goggins) and Clyde (Bradley Whitford) each of whom believes they are Jesus Christ. Hoping that by getting them together in the same room to confront their delusions he can break through to them, Dr. Stone begins a risky, unprecedented experiment that will push the boundaries of psychiatric medicine and leave everyone involved-including Dr. Stone himself-profoundly changed. Three christs movie. Tomris Laffly January 10, 2020 “Your work is novel, brilliant and dangerous, ” his departmental superior says to Dr. Alan Stone ( Richard Gere) a psychiatrist in the midst of conducting a series of revolutionary therapy sessions on three schizophrenic patients who all believed they were Jesus Christ. While Jon Avnet s (“ Fried Green Tomatoes ”) drama is based on Polish-American social psychologist Milton Rokeach s groundbreaking work between the years 1959-61 and his resulting case study book, “The Three Christs of Ypsilanti, ” it sadly lacks the aforesaid freshness, smarts and risk Rokeachs landmark group therapy experiment inherently possessed. In lieu of those qualities, “Three Christs” opts in for frustratingly broad characters that feel like half-considered caricatures, while  Jeff Russo s sentimental, strings-heavy score flattens whatever modest edge the movie might have had. Advertisement Finally getting in front of non-festival crowds after its 2017 Toronto International Film Festival premiere, “Three Christs” could have been a lot more than a shallow “One Flew Over The Cuckoos Nest”-lite, had the joint script by Avnet and Eric Nazarian bothered to define the three patients Dr. Stone observes in the same room together at a Michigan facility, beyond their basic oddities and delusions. The self-professed Christs are Clyde ( Bradley Whitford) Joseph ( Peter Dinklage) and Leon ( Walton Goggins)—all dedicatedly portrayed by their respective actors despite the little depth theyve been given on the page. Clyde insists he can smell an unpleasant odor no one else can and brands himself as Jesus, but not from Nazareth. Both Joseph and Leon demand to be called by their righteous names, while the former sports a posh British accent and the latter, a constant sexual drive as well as an obsession with Dr. Stones young research assistant Becky ( Charlotte Hope. Another prominent figure in the proceedings is Dr. Stones brilliant wife Ruth ( Julianna Margulies) an ex-assistant to her husband who once sat in the associate chair Becky now does. While Avnet briefly engages with the female experience in the field, his inspections dont dig a lot deeper than the casual sexism the two generations of women are exposed to in their respective roles in the company of a man with a God complex. (The film could also have been called “Four Christs, ” but perhaps that would have been too on the nose. Though the movies most significant deficiency is a lack of insight when it comes to the eras cruel approach to psychotherapy—Dr. Stone empathetically launches his trials in direct opposition to malicious electroshocks and heavy drugs of the time, and yet the pioneering nature of his work never really registers when historical context around it is defined in basic good vs. evil terms. Negligent plot diversions that involve drugs and alcoholism, simplistic dialogue lines (“Freud said there were two basic instincts. What were they again? ”) and an all too conventional framing device that signposts the tragedy to come also dont help the matters. Still, Geres charisma and Hopes radiant presence keeps things somewhat watchable, with occasional flourishes of humor amongst the three patients giving the picture a jolt when they jointly engage in art and music. Also noteworthy is Tere Duncan s cozy, 50s-based costume design that has the wisdom to repeat garments to build a believable wardrobe for Becky. If only some of that plausibility had rubbed off on the story, dialing down its often ill-considered whimsy that doesnt seem to know how to approach its original material with the seriousness it deserves. There have been years and years of work that have changed the landscape of psychiatry. The methods that resulted in the progress the field has made over time have been documented in many films. Thankfully, the treatment of mental health disorders such as schizophrenia has become more humane over time, but its through film and other media that we catch a glimpse of how things used to be, which was, at times, borderline barbaric. Based on actual events, Three Christs takes place in Ypsilanti, Michigan in 1959, in the state mental hospital. Richard Gere plays Dr. Allen Stone, a psychiatrist who is determined to cure paranoid schizophrenia through more unconventional means than the usual shock treatments and insulin comas that were business as usual at the time.  At the hospital, there are two patients, Joseph Cassell ( Peter Dinklage) and Clyde Benson ( Bradley Whitford) who both suffer from the delusion that they are Jesus Christ. Dr. Stone is so fascinated with this development that he tasks his research assistant, Becky Anderson (Charlotte Hope) with finding any other patients in Michigan mental hospitals who also think theyre the Son of God. They only found one, Leon Gabor ( Walton Goggins. Stone then has the revolutionary idea of putting the “Three Christs” in a room together to see if it will help cure them of their delusions. “…Leon has an issue with women which stems from a fraught relationship with his mother…” Three Christs  is filled with fine actors. The supporting cast is full of wonderful character actors such as Kevin Pollack and Stephen Root, who play fellow less progressive doctors in the hospital. Juliana Margulies plays Stones wife, Ruth. However, the real bread and butter of the film are Dinklage, Goggins, and Whitford. They brilliantly portray men suffering from paranoid delusions. None of the portrayals are cartoonish, and all are sympathetic. I am a huge fan of basically anything Walton Goggins does, and this film is no exception. Teaming up with director Jon Avnet again after their work together on Justified, he embodies the suffering of not knowing whats real and what isnt to a tee. Peter Dinklage is another actor who is always impeccable in his performances and again, no exception here. Joseph is probably the most impactful character insofar as what happens on his journey, and I couldnt imagine anyone other than Dinklage playing him. Then there is Whitford, who always seems to know how to bring a spark of comedic joy even to the worst characters ( Get Out, anyone. and he imbues Clyde Benson with this comedic sensibility, giving him a penchant for singing commercial jingles at the strangest of times. "…Dr. Stone then has the revolutionary idea of putting the 'Three Christs' in a room together.

Three Christs, 2020. Directed by Jon Avnet. Starring Walton Goggins, Peter Dinklage, Richard Gere, Julianna Margulies, Bradley Whitford, Charlotte Hope, Christina Scherer, Jane Alexander, Kathryn Leigh Scott, and Julian Acosta. SYNOPSIS: Three Christs follows Dr. Alan Stone who is treating three paranoid schizophrenic patients at the Ypsilanti State Hospital in Michigan, each of whom believed they were Jesus Christ. What transpires is both comic and deeply moving. For a film depicting the, during the late 1950s, radical schizophrenic treatment with heavy dosages of empathy, theres not much to feel in Three Christs (even if the overbearing cliché original score and tantalizing talented cast do their best with the material given. More frustrating, perhaps, is how blatantly philosophical the story gets as Dr. Alan Stone (Richard Gere) begins to play God behind the scenes, manipulating various letters as a means to nudge the three titular nut cases that believe they are Jesus Christ on the path of sanity. Peter Dinklage, Walton Goggins, and Bradley Whitford are all terrific character actors, so the novelty of them playing alongside one another as psychologically damaged patients under the impression that they are Jesus seems tailor-made for their skills. And to the films credit, the three individuals are given distinct personality traits not just in hobbies and tragic pasts, but right down to the interpretation of Christ they bring to the table. Goggins is more righteous, demanding, and confrontational (one of the best scenes in the movie sees him taunting Alan Stones assistant Becky as played by Charlotte Hope about lust and sexual impulses) whereas Dinklage is the antithesis to that. One of them says they are from Nazareth, the other corrects the statement and says no. Meanwhile, all of them get their own crazy rants and additional strange behavior. There are also some glimpses into the family life of Alan which range from intriguing (mainly the way he uses psychological tactics as a way to empower his children against bullying) to downright pointless (there seem to be marital problems at home but it never amounts to anything. Nonetheless, it is slightly interesting seeing the good doctor utilizes studies on and off the field. The same applies to the dynamic between Alan and his newly appointed assistant as they unravel personal details about themselves. The problem is that theres actually no sense of progression within Three Christs. Technically, the patients are learning to communicate with one another and even hold group discussions together without lashing out at one another (a far cry from what happens the first time they are all put in the same room together, a notion that was considered groundbreaking therapy at the time) but its never really felt. The script from writer/director Jon Avnet (based on the book about the actual studies from Milton Rokeach and cowriter Eric Nazarian) treats everything at surface level value, telling the actors to go slightly overboard with the basketcase presentation in order to liven things up and provide some gateway into the emotional stakes. To some degree it works, as the loneliness of all three of these people is felt, but only so much considering the depressing histories are exposition dumps rather than actual enticing narrative mechanics. Towards the back end of the film, Three Christs fully leans into melodrama with bad things happening as a result of Alans morally questionable tactics, and the filmmakers dont miss a moment to crank up the sound of the music. That would be fine if it wasnt so emotionally generic and bland. The worst part is none of that empathy or pain ever really translates to the screen; the film is missing some godly magic if you will. Its a shame because the psychology and concept behind it all are fine, but the film just feels the need to beat the viewer over the head with messages and tragedy. If the film hasnt already lost one by the ending, the final scene is sure to induce some cringe. Basically, Three Christs starts out decently and then has a fall from grace. Three christs movie trailer. MOVIE REVIEW “THREE CHRISTS” Rated R. At West Newton Cinema. Grade: B- “Three Christs” is yet another movie “based on actual events. ” In this case, its a famous 60-year-old psychological study of a trio of delusional paranoid schizophrenics who believed they were Jesus Christ. Unlike “One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest, ” in which the patients are sadistically mistreated, “Christs” celebrates its pioneering doctor who conducted his study against continued opposition from the higher-ups. “Three Christs” is adapted from the American social psychologist Milton Rokeachs most famous book, the 1964 “The Three Christs of Ypsilanti. ” This now-famous account of his novel treatments from 1959 to 61 has inspired two operas, a stage play and now a film. Richard Geres Dr. Alan Stone is Rockeachs stand-in, a psychologist convinced theres a better way than the usual harsh treatments: electro-shock therapy, lobotomies, anti-psychotic drugs. Stone has been invited to Michigans Ypsilanti State Hospital near Detroit to be innovative, and he quickly learns words dont necessarily translate into new treatments. His three Christs are: Joseph Cassel (Peter Dinklage) a Jesus with flowery speech, who loves opera. Clyde Benson (Bradley Whitford) a Jesus whose wife died from a botched abortion. He was discovered carrying the decaying fetus, which got him committed. He cant stop taking showers. Leon Gabor (Walton Goggins) was locked up every day as a kid when his mother went off to scrub houses. A great wartime fighter, he returned disturbed. His mothers constant praying over him kept him from sleeping, and when he threatened to strangle her and said he was Jesus, he too was locked up. “Three Christs” also offers details about Stones troubled marriage (to Julianna Margulies) and her issues with his beautiful assistant, Becky Anderson (Charlotte Hope. Director and co-writer Jon Avnet (“Fried Green Tomatoes, ” “Sneaky Pete”) fails to make this decidedly odd material into a credible experience. Avnets straight, serious approach is at odds with these often bizarrely funny three guys with their poses, pronouncements and predicament. All too predictable are the battles between Stone and his petty hospital supervisor (Kevin Pollak) Stone and his mentor (Stephen Root) Stone and his revered teacher (Jane Alexander. Unfortunately, “Three Christs” never leaps from its serious presentation of troubled patients and their equally troubled doctors to convincingly pass as a life-or-death drama.

Three chris's blog. Dr. Milton Rokeach forced three men who all believed themselves to be the Messiah to live together for two years in an effort to bring them out of their irrationality. But what Rokeach learned had little to do with the men themselves. Wikimedia Commons The three Christs were Schizophrenics Leon, Jospeh, and Clyde. In 1959 three schizophrenic patients who all identified as Christ were brought together at a psychiatric hospital in Ypsilanti, Mich. The three Christs were engineered to live together for two years by Psychologist Milton Rokeach in an effort to break their delusions. Rokeach figured that if he could introduce three men who all shared the same delusion then perhaps they could be reasoned out of their insanity. The experiment was dramatized in the 2017 dark comedy starring Peter Dinklage, Three Christs, but before you check out the film, read up on what happened to the real-life three Christs of Ypsilanti. The Three Christs Of Ypsilanti Meet Wikimedia Commons Milton Rokeach, Polish-American social psychologist circa 1970. Milton Rokeach heard about a random grouping of two women who both believed themselves to be the Virgin Mary at a different psychiatric hospital. One of the Marys realized that if another person claimed to be the only Virgin Mary, then surely she must be mistaken about her own identity. She subsequently snapped out of her delusion. Rokeach, who was already a respected psychologist when he came across this study, was inspired and thought to try it for himself. His reasoning was based on the simple biblical notion that there is only one Jesus Christ. Perhaps, then, if he deliberately introduced multiple people who all believed themselves to be Jesus Christ, this would challenge their delusions and in turn break through their irrationality — just as the one Mary had. Wikimedia Commons Inside a mid-century mental hospital, like Ypsilanti. The three Christs were Joseph Cassel, Clyde Benson, and Leon Gabor. They ranged in age from their late thirties to early seventies, and the severity of their delusions varied as well. Mild-mannered, 58-year-old Joseph had been institutionalized for two decades. Prior to falling to his delusions, Joseph was a writer and though he had never been to England, claimed to be English and needed to return. 70-year-old Clyde suffered from dementia and often recalled simpler times working on a railroad and fishing. Leon, 38-years-old, was committed as a boy when he commanded his mother to forsake false idols and worship him as Jesus. He was intelligent and coherent but had been raised by an ill woman. He of all the self-proclaimed Messiahs most resembled Jesus. Rokeach first introduced the men on July 1, 1959. Although they used their given names, each made sure to also reveal himself as Jesus. “It so happens that my birth certificate says that I am  Dr. Domino Dominorum et Rex Rexarum Simplis Christianus Peuris Mentalis Doktor, ” Leon said at this introduction. This meant “Lord of Lords, and King of Kings, Simple Christian Boy Psychiatrist. ” He then said that his birth certificate also declared him Jesus Christ of Nazareth. Joseph protested this and Clyde joined in resulting in a chaotic first meeting. Clyde and Joseph screamed at each other: “Dont try to pull that on me because I will prove it to you… Im telling you Im God! ” “Youre not! ” “Im God, Jesus Christ, and The Holy Ghost! ” Leon would describe the session as mental torture. He claimed that Rokeach was trying to brainwash them. The “Study” Jillian Baughman and Jeffrey Stroup at Great Lakes Urban Exploration Ypsilanti state hospital in Michigan. Rokeach assigned the men rooms next to one another and seats in the cafeteria together as well as jobs in the laundry at the same time. He made sure that the three Christs couldnt get clear of each other and consequently were constantly forced to confront the core belief of their identity. Weeks went by and they argued continuously. None of the men gained any ground with each other but instead, each became more and more frustrated and frazzled. So Rokeach decided to mess with them. Rokeach sent the three Christs letters. Leons were from his newly invented wife “Madame Yeti Woman. ” Josephs were from the head of the hospital. The letters started as an innocuous conversation and included such mundane things as tips to better improve their care. But when Rokeach began to question the three Christs identitys in the letters, the patients broke off contact. The three Christs of Ypsilanti remained exactly that, three Christs. They argued every day and sometimes came to blows. When cornered, they blamed the others are crazy, or controlled by machines. Rokeach then printed a fake article about himself in which he gave a lecture concerning his study of the three men in Ypsilanti Hospital, all believing themselves to be Jesus. Then Rokeach read the letter to them. The three Christs broke down momentarily but regained their delusions. Rokeach was reported by his students involved in the study as being not only absent but also relatively cruel. His students often came to question their own sanity when spending so much time amongst patients. Rokeach also questioned his three patients severely and was hailed as “confrontational” by his students. He had at one point hired a beautiful research assistant to flirt with Leon in an effort to use desire as a means of pulling him out of his delusion. Leon did, of course, fall in love with the assistant. But he did not give up his delusion and became all the more confused because it was just a tease. Leon figured this out and withdrew into himself. “Truth is my friend, I have no other friends, ” Leon said. Rokeachs use of manipulation and illusion against the patients delusions proved only more detrimental. The Conclusion As time went on the men started to humor one anothers delusions. They even became friends, defending each other against other patients. They stopped arguing and talked about mundane things and avoided the subject of Jesus entirely. With nothing much doing, Rokeach prepared to end the study. Even after two years, he had accomplished next to nothing. The only difference was that Leon had changed his name to Dr. Righteous Idealized Dung. Trailer for the 2017 film, Three Christs. The 2017 film is based on Rokeachs experiment, with the doctor played by Richard Gere (of a different name, Dr. Alan Stone) and one of the three Christs — Joseph — by Peter Dinklage. Clyde is played by Bradley Whitford and Leon by a Walton Goggins. The assistant Rokeach had Joseph fall in love with was also featured in the movie, albeit with some dramatization. But from what weve read, the true story and the memoir that followed may prove better entertainment than the screen version. Rokeach wrote a book, aptly titled  The Three Christs Of Ypsilanti in which he claimed to have helped the three Christs and made substantial discoveries. He hadnt, of course, and many years later, in 1984, he wrote a personal expose in which he admitted: “…while I had failed to cure the three Christs of their delusions, they had succeeded in curing mine-of my God-like delusion that I could change them by omnipotently and omnisciently arranging and rearranging their daily lives within the framework of a ‘total institution. ” What Rokeach failed to accomplish within his patients — overcoming their delusion — he was able to realize was a condition he suffered from himself, as he himself had been under the false belief of omnipotence while at Ypsilanti. He explained that in the intervening years he had grown “uncomfortable about the ethics” of his experiment, and admitted that he “really had no right, even in the name of science, to play God and interfere round the clock with their daily lives. ” Now that youve learned about the Three Christs of Ypsilanti, check out what was wrong about Sigmund Freuds psychology. The christmas parade 2014. Edit Summaries Three Christs follows Dr. Alan Stone who is treating three paranoid schizophrenic patients at the Ypsilanti State Hospital in Michigan, each of whom believed they were Jesus Christ. What transpires is both comic and deeply moving. Three Christs tells the story of an extraordinary experiment that began in 1959 at Michigan's Ypsilanti State Hospital, where Dr. Synopsis It looks like we don't have a Synopsis for this title yet. Three christs 2017 dvd. The Three Christs of Ypsilanti Cover of the first edition Author Milton Rokeach Country United States Language English Subject Psychology, schizophrenia Publisher Knopf Publication date 1964 Pages 336 ISBN 0394703952 (1973 edition) The Three Christs of Ypsilanti (1964) is a book-length psychiatric case study by Milton Rokeach, concerning his experiment on a group of three paranoid schizophrenics at Ypsilanti State Hospital [1] in Ypsilanti, Michigan. The book details the interactions of the three patients—Clyde Benson, Joseph Cassel, and Leon Gabor—each of whom believed himself to be Jesus Christ. Synopsis [ edit] Rokeach got the idea from an article in Harper's Magazine describing two women who both believed they were the Virgin Mary. After being assigned as psychiatric hospital roommates, one of the women recovered from her delusion as a result of conversations with the roommate and was discharged. [2] Rokeach was also influenced by Cesare Beccaria 's essay On Crimes and Punishments, concerning the subject of Simon Morin, who was claimed to have been potentially cured in a similar way. [3] 4] As a similar study of delusional belief systems, Rokeach brought together three men who each claimed to be Jesus Christ and confronted them with one another's conflicting claims, while encouraging them to interact personally as a support group. Rokeach also attempted to manipulate other aspects of their delusions by inventing messages from imaginary characters. He did not, as he had hoped, provoke any lessening of the patients' delusions, but did document a number of changes in their beliefs. While initially the three patients quarreled over who was holier and reached the point of physical altercation, they eventually each explained away the other two as being patients with a mental disability in a hospital, or dead and being operated by machines. [5] The graduate students who worked with Rokeach on the project have been strongly critical of the morality of the project because of the amount of dishonesty and manipulation by Rokeach and the amount of distress experienced by the patients. [2] Rokeach added a comment in the final revision of the book that, while the experiment did not cure any of the three Christs, It did cure me of my godlike delusion that I could manipulate them out of their beliefs. 2] The book served as inspiration for the song ' Ypsilanti' on the Detroit band Protomartyr 's debut album No Passion All Technique [6. Editions [ edit] The Three Christs of Ypsilanti was first published in 1964. Rokeach came to think that his research had been manipulative and unethical, and he offered an apology in the afterword of the 1984 edition of the book: I really had no right, even in the name of science, to play God and interfere round the clock with their daily lives. 5] The book was re-published by New York Review Books in 2011. [1] Movie Adaptation [ edit] A dark comedy film based on the book, Three Christs, starring Peter Dinklage, Richard Gere, Walton Goggins and Bradley Whitford, and directed by Jon Avnet, was released on September 12, 2017.
